In the early '70s I took my family on vacation, traveling around the U.S. in our VW camper. When I was cleaning up after the trip, I found a can of beans and laughed that I had taken it on tour through 17 states. I didn't think much more about it till years later.
The gas shortage of the mid-'70s caused us to spend hours in gas lines. Then as time went on, our nation became more concerned with gas prices, our dependency on foreign oil, and the conservation of our planet.
It became apparent that taking a can of beans on vacation wasn't the best idea, and I got the idea to create this website and an Excess Baggage Calculator to demonstrate how much gas it wasted to carry my can of beans around the country. And how much you might save by taking the excess baggage out of your car.
As it turned out, a little excess baggage doesn't waste so much gas because the weight is insignificant compared to the total weight of the vehicle. What this demonstrates, on the other hand, is how little more gas it takes to carry a carpool passenger. So instead of an Excess Baggage Calculator, I created a Commuting Calculator to encourage carpooling.
